Integrated, global hydro sciences businesses support rapid growth of clean, offshore wind energy

Sept. 6, 2022 (Seattle, WA)—Woocheen, the ocean-health business platform owned by Alaska Native Corporation Sealaska, has brought on global engineer Boris Caro Vargas to lead its U.S.-based geotechnical and marine construction functions as Woocheen’s CEO of commercial services.

Caro Vargas, a structural and civil engineer by training, is an accomplished leader, manager and problem solver with nearly 20 years of construction experience in Europe and the Americas. Most recently, he served as managing director at BSL, UK subsidiary of one of the world’s largest specialist geotechnical contractors, Soletanche Bachy. This French $1.7 billion parent company employs more than 10,000 people in 60 countries.

Caro Vargas will lead Woocheen companies Gregg Drilling and CS Marine, both based in California. Along with the rest of Woocheen’s senior leadership, he will make the most of the company’s digital and data expertise, seafood businesses and core environmental and construction capabilities to integrate functions across the organization and foster ocean health to reverse climate change.

“Woocheen has built a unique and exciting collection of global talent with a genuine commitment to people and planet,” Caro Vargas said. “We know we are in a pivotal moment around climate and the digital revolution, and the solution is to do what Woocheen is doing: Have a common purpose and ensure people are working together and looking ahead.”

Caro Vargas’ special combination of passion and experience make him a perfect addition to Woocheen’s growing executive group, said CEO Terry Downes.

“Climate matters profoundly to Boris, and he is clearly a person of integrity who cares about people,” Downes said. “He has led a number of large businesses and has tremendous capacity to navigate complexity. We’re excited about the many ways Boris strengthens our leadership team.”

Caro Vargas, originally from France, holds two masters in civil engineering, one from Ponts Paris Tech and one from the University of Roma II. His work history includes leadership positions with Nicholson Construction in Denver, Colo., and Geofundaciones in Colombia, as well as more than four years with Soldata (now Sixense), where grew the team and revenue, putting Soldata at the top of North America’s Instrumentation and Monitoring industry. Prior to joining Soldata, he held several positions within Soletanche Bachy, including as Operations Manager for the southeast branch of Freyssinet, Spain.

Caro Vargas joins Woocheen at a time of growth and expansion. Ireland-based Causeway Geotech became part of Woocheen in early 2022, joining Gregg Drilling, CS Marine, digital and data companies MBS and Cognitell, and Woocheen’s Marine Services and other construction functions to enhance Woocheen’s Hydro Sciences business. Woocheen bought Chessington, UK-based New England Seafood International in 2020 and brought Iceland’s Icemar and AG Seafood into its sustainable seafood group earlier this year.
